Important Information updated 3/17/2020

Grace and Peace to you all.

This is obviously not the Lent that any of us expected even a week ago. We are definitely in a wilderness place right now – journeying through unknown and uncharted territory for the church and society.

While we are all still trying to wrap out heads around all the information that is coming at us every day and some times every hour, the leadership here are First Christian Church in Kent want to be sure we are responding in a way that faithful and that is in the best interest of our congregational members, especially those most vulnerable to this new virus.

We are listening seriously to the recommendations from the Center for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, The Ohio Department of Health, Portage County Health Department, and recommendations from the General Board of the Christian Church and our General Minister and President the Rev. Terry Hord Owens.

At this time we have decided to cancel all worship, and church meetings through the month of March. We will provide alternative worship methods and daily meditations through Facebook live: https://www.facebook.com/1stChristianChurch/ These services will also be recorded and posted on our website so you can listen to the audio.

If you are not currently connected to Facebook please like our Facebook page. Search for First Christian Church in Kent. Our page currently has a purple header with our Lenten themes on it and includes our logo with a red chalice surrounded by rainbow colored hands.

We also encourage you to remember that the church’s expenses continue regardless and we hope that you will continue your tithes and offerings to the church. This time of adjustment allows us to use all the many ways of giving to the church. You may send a check to the church, set up automatic withdrawals from the bank, or install the Venmo account on your phone or computer so that you can give online.

All decisions were made prayerfully and carefully with the health and safety of our congregation in mind. It is never easy to decide to cancel worship, but unusual and unexpected situations like the one we face today call for just this kind of difficult decision making.

I encourage you all to stay in touch via phone and email. Check in on neighbors and congregation members to be sure no one is in need of help. Be in prayer for those who are ill, for their families, for health care workers, for our national and state leaders who continue to work for reasoned responses to this crisis, and for each other.

If you have a need for pastoral care please don’t hesitate to call me, Pastor Jodi or the office and we will respond as quickly as possible.

This can be a time of great fear but Psalm 46 assures us that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and even the mountain shake.

May blessings be on all of you at this time.

Pastor Julie

Welcome to First Christian Church in Kent

We are a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We do not have a formal creed but welcome all who believe in and seek to follow Christ.

First Christian Church has been a part of the Kent community since 1827. We participate with other churches who make up the Christian Church in Ohio. There are some 4,000 congregations with nearly a million members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada.

First Christian Church encourages a friendly atmosphere… extends a warm welcome to all persons… promotes a diversity in all matters… has developed an intentional sense of inclusiveness… honors an acceptance and respect for different theological views… and constantly attempts to foster an environment that values relationships with God and one another.
